If you’re looking for a coastal destination that offers more than just a beach, Devbag might be one of Maharashtra’s best-kept secrets. Tucked away in Sindhudurg district near Malvan and Tarkarli, this peaceful coastal village sits on a narrow strip of land where the Karli River backwaters run alongside the Arabian Sea. The result is a destination that offers the calm of the backwaters, the thrill of the sea, and the charm of Konkan hospitality – all in one place.
Where is Devbag?
Devbag is a small coastal village about 8 km from Malvan in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district. It is often included in trips covering Tarkarli, Sindhudurg Fort, Tsunami Island, and other Konkan destinations, making it an excellent stop on a longer coastal itinerary.
How to Reach Devbag
The most enjoyable way to reach Devbag is by road. If you’re travelling from Pune or Mumbai, I’d highly recommend making it a road trip. The drive through Konkan is part of the experience itself – winding ghats, coconut groves, sleepy villages, and occasional glimpses of the coastline make the journey just as memorable as the destination. If you have the time, don’t rush it.
If you prefer travelling by train, Kudal is the nearest railway station, with taxis and local transport readily available. The nearest airport is Sindhudurg (Chipi) Airport, though many travellers also fly into Goa and continue by road.
Where to Stay in Devbag
Devbag has something for every budget, from cosy family-run homestays and beach cottages to comfortable resorts and premium waterfront properties. You can find stays starting at around ₹1,000 per night, while luxury resorts can cost ₹4,000 or more, depending on the season and amenities. If I could recommend one thing, it would be to stay on the narrow stretch between the backwaters and the beach. Wake up by the backwaters, take a short walk, and you’re on the beach – it’s one of the things that makes Devbag truly unique.
5 Things You Shouldn’t Miss in Devbag
1. Water Sports
Pick your adrenaline – scuba diving, parasailing, kayaking, jet skiing, banana rides, and enough water sports to spend an entire day in the sea.
2. Visit Tsunami Island
Explore the crystal-clear waters around the sandbar popularly known as Tsunami Island, and don’t miss the floating breakfast experience while you’re there.
3. Go on a Dolphin Safari
Take the first boat out for a dolphin safari. You might not spot dolphins every time, but the sunrise, the sea breeze, and the ride itself make the early wake-up completely worth it.
4. Stay Between the Backwaters and the Beach
One of Devbag’s biggest highlights isn’t an activity at all. Stay on the narrow strip of land where the Karli River backwaters lie on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. Wake up by the backwaters, take a short walk to the beach, or simply slow down and soak in the peaceful rhythm of this coastal village. Sometimes, doing nothing here is the best part of the trip.
5. Eat Like You’re in Malvan
Devbag is as much about the food as it is about the views. Treat yourself to a fresh fish thali, sip chilled solkadhi, and don’t leave without trying ukadiche modak. Simple, fresh, and full of flavour, Malvani food is an experience in itself.
Things to Know Before Visiting Devbag
- Expect humid weather, especially between March and June. Light cotton clothes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and plenty of water will make your trip much more comfortable.
- Carry some cash for smaller vendors and local bookings.
- If you’re planning to visit during long weekends or holidays, book your stay in advance for better options.
- October to February is generally the best time to visit for pleasant weather and clearer water for scuba diving.
Final Thoughts
Devbag is one of those places that’s best enjoyed slowly – with early mornings, long walks on the beach, fresh seafood, and enough free time for the destination to surprise you.
